Talking up interest from other clubs when in negotiations for a renewal is an agent trick as old as time. Indeed, it may be claimed that any representative not doing so is being somewhat negligent.
Agents don’t often go direct with their claims, instead preferring to be referred to as a source close to negotiations, yet sometimes they feel taking that public step is warranted.
That’s the case of Radu Drăgușin’s agent and Newcastle United.
In September, there were claims of Magpies interest in the Genoa defender, but these claims didn’t really create a lot of hype.
So, in November, up steps Florin Manea, the player’s representative, to give the story a little kick up the behind: “It’s not an offer from Newcastle, I’ve had meetings with both Newcastle and other teams. Genoa would only sell him for an offer higher than €30m.”
Days later, the 21-year-old’s mother also spoke about a potential dream move to England.
Now, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Drăgușin is on the verge of a Genoa renewal. It’s reported the young defender is set to extend his deal until June 2027, and will get a pay rise in the process.
Of course, should Newcastle interest be as genuine as the agent claimed, then there’s still the chance of a transfer in the future.
