Dutch icon Marco van Basten has questioned why Ajax are selling Mohammed Kudus to West Ham United and why the player is keen on the Hammers.
Van Basten has been speaking to Ziggo Sport, relayed by Soccer News, regarding the impending transfer after Kudus shone in the Europa League for the Dutch side last night.
Kudus bagged an impressive hattrick in the 4-1 qualifying clash against Ludogorets, a performance which is being seen as a swansong for his Ajax career.
The midfielder is currently being heavily linked with a move to West Ham, who have pushed for his signature over the last few days as they look to reinvest the funds secured from the sale of Declan Rice.
The deal will certainly be considered something of a coup for West Ham, with Kudus having been linked with several big sides over the last year amid continued impressive performances for Ajax in the Eredivisie and the Champions League.
Van Basten cannot see the logic in the move, though, and openly questioned that in his comments to Ziggo Sport.
“Why is he going to West Ham, why?” he said on the matter.
“He still has a two-year contract. Surely Ajax is in the business of making a good team, not just making money.
“What is the function of a football club? To entertain the public and give players the opportunity to excel, or to make money?
“You are going to sell people now because you will have money. He still has everything to show at Ajax. He has done well for a year. For him, people come to the stadium.”
