Manchester City star İlkay Gündoğan has a deal expiring in June and Barcelona are keen to sign him for free.
Mundo Deportivo state there’s uncertainty over the 32-year-old’s arrival at the Camp Nou due to the Catalan club’s own situation and Manchester City’s efforts to retain him.
Despite the German’s agent reaching an agreement in principle for a three-year deal, in recent days, there’s fear within the Camp Nou offices over missing out on the midfielder.
That’s because Manchester City have changed their stance. After offering a one-year deal, they ‘now agree to offer a long-term contract as per the player’s wish’. This, coupled with Barca’s economic uncertainty has caused some concerns for the Spanish giants.
Barcelona are waiting for La Liga’s approval to register renewals of a few of their players, which has to be completed first before carrying out new signings. They haven’t received the approval so far.
Although Xavi Hernández’s side are convinced of receiving a green light from La Liga, the delay would end up jeopardising other operations, including that of Gündoğan.
Pep Guardiola’s side agreeing to meet the player’s conditions for a renewal and Barca’s own financial situation should help Manchester City reach an agreement to renew his deal.
Gündoğan is expected to make a decision on his future after the Champions League final on June 10th. This would give Barcelona time and hope to convince the German to join them.
For now, Barcelona are no longer optimistic of the player’s arrival for free in the summer.
