While Ruben Amorim would be the ideal replacement for Bruno Lage, the €30m release clause in his Sporting CP contract means Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking at alternatives for now.
One of those is Julen Lopetegui, who is currently struggling at Sevilla this season, despite shining with them in the past, with Wolves clearly liking what he has done previously compared to what is happening in the current campaign.
There has been a lot of talk of Sevilla looking for a successor, but the Premier League side wanting Lopetegui could work in their favour.
That’s because sacking him would cost Sevilla money, and a previous report from Marca stated that Wolves swooping in for him could save them a few pennies (his wages until the end of the season).
Well, La Razon in Spain seem to back some of this up with an article on Tuesday, even if their figures are slightly different.
They claim that if Sevilla were to sack Lopetegui, it would cost them €12m, which is certainly a lot more than Marca’s report of the fee being his wages until the end of the season (which won’t be €12m).
However, La Razon also had that Wolves ‘want him as the new manager’, and if that were to become a more concrete matter, then the Spaniard ‘would agree to lower the amount’ of said fee, likely in the knowledge he would be getting a job off the back of it.
There appears to be some confusion regarding the details of what a Lopetegui sacking would entail, but that’s now more than one outlet pushing Wolves’ interest in the manager, and, as the old adage goes, there’s rarely smoke without some sort of fire.
