Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo has revealed how a personal visit from Samuel Eto’o convinced him to switch allegiance to Cameroon.

Mbeumo is a currently one of the stars of the show at Brentford, having played a key role for them since his arrival from Troyes in 2019.

Since then, he’s made 141 appearances for the club, racking up 34 goals and 28 assists in that time to help the Bees gain promotion to the Premier League and then avoid relegation comfortably last season.

He’s been in good form at the beginning of this season, with two goals in seven games so far, scoring in the impressive 4-0 win over Manchester United and the 5-2 defeat of Leeds.

His good goalscoring numbers have not seen him earn international recognition from France despite playing for their U17s, U20s and Under 21s earlier in his career.

That’s seen him now switch his allegiance to Cameroon, whom he is eligible for via his father.

When the news was announced last month the Cameroon football federation stated it was due to extensive negotiations with Samuel Eto’o, and now Mbeumo has detailed the effort the African icon went to.

“People may have thought it was the first time when I went there this summer but no I was already there before,” Actu Cameroun report him saying.

“I’m not going to lie to you and say that the World Cup is not something that made me think.

“I met Eto’o who was a major factor in my decision. He came to see me in London, he explained the project.

“I took the time to think about it and I made the decision to commit myself to the Lions.”
