Newcastle United ‘came knocking’ for Mainz defender Jeremiah St Juste, and it’s ‘quite possible’ they will return in the summer.
That’s according to Fussball Transfers, who put the Magpies in the picture for the ‘fastest player in the Bundesliga’.
Back in the January transfer window, we covered a report that Newcastle were keen on the 25-year-old Dutchman as they sought out options to bolster their defence during the winter window.
Ultimately they elected to sign Dan Burn from Brighton, a move that has worked out well for all parties so far.
Newcastle will continue to strengthen in the summer, though, and St Juste could be on their list of options again.
FT report that the player, who is officially the fastest in the Bundesliga, having clocked a speed of 36.64km/h, is ‘attracting interest’ from around Europe.
Newcastle are one of those who are keen and ‘came knocking’ in the January transfer window without getting a deal done.
They’ve now been joined by the likes of Leicester City and West Ham, who were brought into the mix yesterday, and it is ‘quite possible’ that all of them ‘will bid’ in the summer transfer window.
A major plus point is his asking price, which will be around €12m as his contract expires next summer and an extension ‘seems unlikely’ at this point.
One catch is the fact he has only made eight appearances in the league this season due to ‘persistent shoulder problems’, so any interested parties will have to ‘take a very close look’ at his medical record.
We’re sure that’s something Newcastle will be all over, and at €12m, this could be the kind of smart deal that makes sense.
