Ronald Araújo’s long-term future has been a regular topic of discussion in the Spanish media for the past few weeks.
The defender’s current deal at Barcelona expires in 2023 and he’s reportedly on Chelsea’s transfer agenda.
Last month, Sport reported he ‘arouses’ interest from the west London club, while renewal talks with La Liga side didn’t start well. Earlier this month, the Champions League winners wanting the defender was again pushed forward by the Catalan press.
The centre-back joined Barca’s academy from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 and was promoted to the senior team in 2020. Araújo has been a regular for them over the last 18 months, but is currently one of the lowest earners at the Camp Nou.
According to Marca, Xavi Hernández’s side are now focusing on renewing several of their players’ contracts. The talks started before Christmas and the two most ‘complicated’ cases for the Camp Nou side are the Uruguay international and Gavi.
Regarding the South American, it’s claimed he has a ‘very strong’ proposal from Chelsea.
Barcelona must act fast and tie the central defender to a new deal before the end of the season, so that they don’t let Araújo enter his final year of contract.
