As things stand, Newcastle United have the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 34 goals from 16 matches, which shows exactly why they are sitting in the relegation zone.

The Magpies were taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October and the new owners will have their first transfer window with the club next month.

It won’t be a surprise if the Tyneside club look to bolster their defence in January and they have already identified a target in Sven Botman, as reported in the past.

If a report from Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, Grand Hotel Calciomercato is to be believed, however, then it’s a bit more than that, with the Dutchman very high up on their list.

According to the claims, Lille star Sven Botman is ‘one of the dreams’ of the English club’s owners. They also state Eddie Howe’s side are ‘following him closely’.

It’s claimed the 21-year-old is ‘ready for a giant step’ in his career and has a desire to join a ‘top level club’. Newcastle, however, doesn’t fall into this category at the moment.

Newcastle have managed only one win in the league and are placed 19th in the table, and their position in the table does not favour them to sign Botman.

The report further adds the player’s Italian intermediary has already held talks with several Serie A sides, for a possible transfer next summer, leaving the Magpies with a lot of work to do if they want to fulfil that dream of theirs.
