On Thursday, Gazzetta dello Sport had a big double paged article about Federico Chiesa and how he was worth, at the very least, €100m in the eyes of Juventus.
They didn’t link any Premier League clubs, but that doesn’t mean others didn’t do that job afterwards, since the Italy international is one of the bigger stars in his country these days following his great performances at the 2020 Euros.
Few clubs would be able to afford him, but Chelsea, following their recent show of strength on the transfer market, certainly could, and that’s something journalist Gianni Balzarini capitalised on when discussing Chiesa with Calciomercato.it.
He said: “Will an auction be triggered? Probably, yes. We must be realistic and think that his name is probably in the sights of big teams. It will be necessary to understand what Juve will do. If you get a PSG, Chelsea or Manchester City with €150m, it’s hard to say no.
“It’s also true that a symbolic footballer is needed. Dybala has already paid for this situation. A group needs to identify with someone important. The irresistible offer for Chiesa could arrive”.
The 23-year-old, technically still currently on loan from Fiorentina, has scored two goals and assisted another in seven appearances this season, including the winner in a 1-0 victory in the Champions League against… Chelsea.
We’ll have to see if Roman Abramovich decides once again to open his chequebook for a superstar following the recent acquisitions of Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku, but if there is one player who could certainly make a change at Stamford Bridge, it’s probably Chiesa.
