A mention of the match between Brentford and Liverpool is how Spanish outlet Cadena Ser starts a story about David Raya today.
After that 3-3 draw in September, the Bees’ goalkeeper received big compliments from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who claimed stopper could be a No.10, because of the ability his showed with his feet.
So with their interview called ‘A goalkeeper with the 10’, Cadena Ser spoke to Raya about how great it was to hear those words from the Liverpool coach, and the special skills which have been allowing him to stand out at Brentford.
“When I heard him say that, I was very surprised, I didn’t expect it at all,” Raya told Cadena Ser. “It’s a pleasure to hear those words and more from a coach like him.”
“We’ve worked on it and the way to go out playing is to add one more player. We form a defence of four when we have the ball. The right central goes to his side, the left to his, and me in the middle with Pontus Jansson at the exit. It’s the way to break the pressure line made by the rival.”
“I think our idea is that we can play in different ways. The style of the team is to keep possession, but in this category it’s very difficult to have the ball the whole game. We always play to win and we don’t shrink from anyone. That’s why I think people want to see us.”
Raya left Spain when he was still a teenager, signing for Blackburn Rovers’ academy back in 2012. It was in 2019 that he joined Brentford in a €3.35m deal and he didn’t take long to impress at the club. Last year, he agreed to a contract extension which ties him to the club until 2024.
“Our goal is always the same. Go game by game and finish as high as possible. We’ll see where we are in May. Hopefully we look back and see that we have established ourselves well in the league.”
