Following Villarreal’s penalty shootout win against Manchester United in the Europa League final, Alberto Moreno managed to get himself trending on social media.
Given his past with Liverpool, the fullback took to Instagram and shouted “You’ll never walk alone”, and then something along the lines of ‘Manchester, out, out, out”.
That went down very well with Liverpool supporters, who were obviously enjoying Manchester United’s defeat anyway. That someone who used to represent them had not only played a part in beating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to the trophy, but then rubbed his Liverpool connection in further, was absolute gold for fans.
Moreno’s Villarreal face Manchester United at Old Trafford this evening, and he’s granted an interview to Marca. As part of the chat, the Spanish newspaper asked if he’s worried about the reception he’ll receive.
Most United supporters will likely have long forgotten what happened, and Moreno isn’t expected to start the match anyway, but Marca quote him as saying: “I remembered Liverpool a lot because it is in my heart, just like Sevilla. But that expression that became so viral I don’t want it to be interpreted as that I hate United.
“It was the result of the ecstasy of the moment. Because you see yourself in a humble club in a humble city, which had never reached a final. And beating Manchester United that way on penalties… I was on a cloud. But it was nothing of contempt, nor hatred. What’s more, I have friends and teammates with whom I have been in the national team. With De Gea, in the sub 21, with Mata in the seniors. At no time was it malicious.”
That’s that cleared up then.
