Already a wanted commodity before his big move to Napoli, Victor Osimhen has caught the attention this year after a rather tough first campaign in Italy.
The Nigeria international has been instrumental to his club’s fantastic start to the season, one that sees them top the Serie A table after six wins in six games.
The 22-year-old has scored six goals in his first six games, including a brace against Leicester City in the Europa League, and clubs, of which Manchester United are a part of, have started to turn their heads in his direction.
That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who explain a number of clubs have ‘already started to follow him’, with the Red Devils among the list of high-profile suitors.
Their need for a goalscorer for the post-Edinson Cavani era was somewhat quelled by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the 36-year-old won’t be around forever either, meaning the future needs to be thought about.
As things stand, the Italian newspaper make it clear a transfer ‘would cost no less than €120m’, which is ‘double what was paid two summers ago’, with the €60m spent now seen as a ‘real coup on the market’, which could ‘turn into a huge capital gain’.
However, they point out ‘there is no possibility’ of a sale right now, suggesting any movement wouldn’t take place until next summer at the earliest.
Osimhen is contracted to Napoli until 2025, and it’s even possible that, before the end of the season, Aurelio De Laurentiis and director of football Cristiano Giuntoli ‘will propose to extend him for another year’.
Down the player’s end, it’s suggested he is ‘pleasantly surprised by the interest he has managed to create around his person’, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to leave just yet, fully aware that he could win a trophy where he is before the end of the season if his team’s form continues.
One to keep an eye on, but if goals keep happening, this will only grow stronger.
