When Nahitan Nandez to Leeds United claims resurfaced in Italy last week, it was suggested the Uruguayan would prefer a move to Inter Milan.
The Serie A club had been linked, and it was understandable if the player fancied a move to the current Italian champions.
Inter then signing Hakan Çalhanoğlu put further pressure on the club’s finances. They had been looking to raise a huge amount of money through sales this summer, and whilst the Turkey international arrived as a free agent, the costs associated with the deal are weighty.
That means Nandez to Inter slipped away, and now a move to Leeds United is being repeatedly talked up. On Wednesday evening, we covered claims from Italy that the player is ‘ready to leave’ Cagliari for Elland Road, and would be the club’s record signing at €36m.
La Nuova Sardegna, who kicked off the recent reports, state Marcelo Bielsa’s side have the signing ‘in their hands’. Nandez is described as being ‘more and more English’ and a sale ‘almost inevitable’.
There is interest from elsewhere, although Leeds United ‘seem to be in pole position’.
Inter Milan, AS Roma and Napoli won’t, or can’t, pay the €36m clause, and it’s thought the Premier League club are prepared to do so.
Leeds United going in fully prepared to pay the €36m, without negotiation to get the price down, seems a little unusual.
