Georginio Wijnaldum was supposed to have agreed a contract with Barcelona by now, with endless claims in the European media stating that’s where the Dutchman was going.
The Catalan club are looking for a cheap transfer summer, and getting the midfielder from Liverpool as a free agent would have been part of that plan.
Had a transfer fee been involved, it’s likely Barcelona wouldn’t have had much interest in the player, so it presented an opportunity for Wijnaldum that he wouldn’t otherwise have had.
Barcelona weren’t rushing forward to complete a deal, clearly not entirely sold on the Liverpool man, and that’s presented a chance for PSG to come into the picture.
Monday’s edition of L’Equipe says ‘talks are well underway with the Liverpool midfielder’. Whilst there’s nothing yet signed between the parties, there’s clearly confidence that a deal can be done soon.
Wijnaldum is expected to earn more than he has been doing at Anfield.
