Chelsea striker Timo Werner has insisted he does not regret joining the club last summer, despite a difficult first year in England.
The German striker joined Chelsea in a £47.7m deal from RB Leipzig last summer, with the Blues winning the race for his signature after an impressive season in Germany.
Adapting to life in the Premier League has proven to be tough for the forward, though, who has managed just six goals in the Premier League this season.
His numbers are not as bad as the perception around him, though, with 12 assists, meaning he’s got 18 goal contributions to his name this season.
Factor in the Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup, and he has 12 goals and 15 assists in 51 games this season, a tally that puts him top of Chelsea’s charts.
Those are the numbers he is choosing to focus on, insisting he doesn’t regret the move to Stamford Bridge when asked by Sport 1.
“A clear no! I wasn’t being hard on myself with those words; that was simply the truth from my point of view,” he told them.
“If the line had been drawn differently by the VAR, then they could have decided on the same height. But all in all, I’m not dissatisfied.
“If someone had told me before the season, ‘you’re in double figures for goals and assists, you’re going to the top four, the FA Cup final and Champions League final’, I would have signed it straight away.
“Even if I don’t hide the fact that I had a difficult phase in between when I gave away the simplest goal-scoring chances, also at the DFB or my shots on goal were missed.”
Despite relatively good numbers, there are numerous rumours that Chelsea will be on the hunt for another striker this summer.
The likes of Erling Haaland, Andre Silva and even Robert Lewandowski have already been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge, and the list is likely to continue to grow in the coming months.
Whether any deal actually happens remains to be seen, but it’s felt the arrival of a big-name could push Werner towards the exit.
He’s got no interest in that, though, insisting he thinks he’s improved this season and plans to start afresh next season and prove his worth.
“I don’t regret my switch! Twenty-seven goals are not all that bad,” he added.
“I scored twelve goals and provided 15 assists. That makes me the leader at Chelsea. I’ve improved a lot, especially in terms of assists.
“But, of course, every missed chance hurts. For years, I’ve been in the business of creating those chances, and I’m sure I’ll get there again.
“Next year, I’ll start from scratch, I’ll keep working hard, and maybe the football god will be a bit better with me next season.”
