David de Gea has not enjoyed the last few weeks.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has conceded 11 goals in three matches for the Red Devils, which includes letting in six goals in his side’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on October 4th.

Luis Enrique included the 29-year-old in Spain’s squad for the ongoing international break and he kept a clean sheet in La Roja’s victory against Switzerland.

However, he failed to repeat it against Ukraine on Tuesday as Spain suffered a 1-0 defeat in their latest UEFA Nations League tie in Kyiv. Viktor Tsyhankov netted in the 76th minute and that was the hosts only shot on goal.

Cadena Ser journalist Manu Carreño was not pleased with the United keeper’s display and suggested he should no longer start for his country.

“He is not to start for Spain. We have a problem in the goal. De Gea is a great goalkeeper, but when he has to make 2 or 3 important saves with the national team, he is not the way he should be,” he said.

Carreño further stressed De Gea doesn’t transmit ‘confidence’, which, according to him, was the reason Spain conceded against Ukraine.

Another Cadena Ser journalist Antón Meana was highly critical of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s custodian.

Meana said: “De Gea has shown that he cannot play for the Spanish team… He is the worst starting goalkeeper in the history of the Spanish team.”

De Gea has been subject to heavy criticism for his displays for both club and country. He will have to step up in order to retain his place, especially at United, with Dean Henderson breathing down his neck at Old Trafford.
