The Portuguese media today brings a few more details on Aston Villa’s talks for the signing of manager Bruno Lage.

Newspaper A Bola claims to have confirmed Sport TV’s news which says the 44-year-old is ‘very close’ to taking charge of the Premier League side.

They add that the agreement between Aston Villa and Bruno Lage did not depend on the outcome of the battle against relegation, as the coach would have arrived either way.

Bruno Lage has some past experience both in the Premier League as in the Championship, since he was Carlos Carvalhal’s assistant at Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday.

According to the report, proof that he’s eager to return to England is that he’s just rejected an offer to manage Braga in Portugal.

A Bola says it’s agent Jorge Mendes who’s been handling the talks, and the official announcement could be made very soon.

The outlet recalls that Aston Villa tried to sign Bruno Lage back in October 2018, and this information was revealed by director Garcia Pitarch in an interview with them in August 2019.

Newspaper O Jogo is another one who claims that Lage is ‘one step’ from moving to Aston Villa. Their story is mostly focused on the fact that Benfica, who recently sacked him, will no longer be obligated to pay the salary left on his former contract.

Villa parting ways with Dean Smith would be a surprise given he’s kept them up.
