Spanish newspaper AS have a big feature in their Saturday edition, explaining how a round of contract renewals at La Liga’s biggest clubs is partly due to Premier League pressure.
Premier League clubs are able to pay huge wages, and Manchester United can pay some of the highest in the world, and AS say that’s what led Paul Pogba to the club, and back to English football.
In Spain there’s been many reasons given for why Pogba went to Manchester United and not Real Madrid, and AS say it was because he was asking for €20m per year, after tax.
AS say Madrid could afford that, but it would have meant other stars then asking for huge wages too, breaking the pay scale.
Whilst the Spanish press continue to give reasons for why Pogba ended up at Manchester United, they often seem to contradict themselves… at least slightly.
At one point it was because he wasn’t good enough, then it was that the transfer fee was out of Madrid’s range, and now it’s about a pay scale.
