Just like the Premier League, Serie A has plans to get started again soon, and try to end the current season. This presents a problems for players on loan.
Loan contracts tend to end in June, and with matches set to go on beyond that date, it means agreements will be needed to extend stays.
One player in this situation is Chris Smalling, who is spending the campaign on loan from Manchester United to AS Roma. He’s done well, and the Italian club want him secured for the rest of the campaign.
Fortunately for them, Gazzetta dello Sport report Manchester United ‘have basically agreed’ that Smalling can continue at Roma until the end of the season.
Roma want to keep the defender, and Gazzetta say that’s what Smalling wants too. However, Manchester United are the obstacle in the way of a full transfer.
Should no permanent deal be agreed, then Roma could loan the player for a further season, paying €4m to do so and covering his wages. Manchester United may not be so keen on such a plan, especially given Smalling’s contract ends in 2022.
They don’t want him to return to Old Trafford in summer 2021, and have a lower potential price due to his contract nearing an end.
