Atlético Madrid defender Mario Hermoso has admitted his side were ‘lucky’ to beat Liverpool in the Champions League.
The Spanish side knocked the reigning champions of the competition back in March after a stunning victory at Anfield.
They had headed to Merseyside with a 1-0 lead under their belt after a defensive masterclass at the Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg.
Many had predicted a comfortable win for Liverpool in the second leg, and it looked like being the case when Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino had fired them into a 2-0 lead come extra time.
However, two goals from Marcos Llorente and another from Alvaro Morata turned the game on its head, securing a 3-2 win for Atlético on the night and 4-2 victory overall.
There have been plenty of claims that the La Liga side were lucky on the evening given Liverpool’s dominance in it, and while Diego Simeone has disputed that, Hermoso admits it was the case.
“It was worth it to suffer in Liverpool,” he told Marca.
“The important thing is to always try to win. If you can’t, the important thing is not to lose. We did well enough.
“We played both games well, and we were lucky to win. The time you spend with your colleagues is an important time.
“The longer you spend and the better relationship you have, it makes the team go in the same direction when we need it to be like that.”
