The Portuguese press is today full of reports about Liverpool’s alleged interest in Benfica striker Carlos Vinícius.
Most of these stories credit Spanish outlet AS for claiming the Reds’ chase. And since it would be quite unusual to see it coming from Spain, we went to take a look at what’s really going on.
The report claims that Liverpool have been sending scouts to watch the striker, who could be a replacement for Roberto Firmino.
Although AS doesn’t credit anyone else, it still seemed like this was coming from somewhere else, so we took a look at what’s being said in England.
It turns out there’s a big story from Team Talk from the start of the week in which they say the exact same thing. It’s claimed that Liverpool are ‘keeping a close watch’ on the player.
They credit the chase to the Portuguese press, saying the news came to England via Sport Witness, as if they were just covering the information.
Sport Witness didn’t claim Liverpool are interested in the player. We only reported that he stood-out by scoring two goals in a match where the Reds had scouts in the stands.
Now to continue the chain of fake news, we expect Portuguese newspapers to have something about this on Thursday. That’s when the English press will cover it again, and the rumour mill will continue.
