Brexit could end up having an unforeseen effect on the transfer market, with prices likely to skyrocket for British players.
That’s according to Samp News 24, who report that Sampdoria could find themselves in the middle of a hugely beneficial transfer auction in years to come.
The Italian club is currently the home of Ronaldo Vieira, who was the subject of a bid from West Ham United in January.
The midfielder joined from Leeds United back in 2018, swapping Lancashire and England, for Genoa and Italy.
And that could make him hot property once Brexit hits. Samp News explains that, once Brexit is over, the FA may look to limit the maximum number of foreign players at a club from 17 to 12.
That would lead Premier League clubs, like the aforementioned West Ham, scrambling to add British players to their squads and ‘many’ have ‘few’ in there at present.
They would, therefore, look to bring some of the British talent currently plying their trade in Europe back to England.
Ronaldo Vieira is one such player, and it’s explained that the ‘millionaire’ offer from West Ham in January could be the starting point.
With Premier League sides likely to be on the hunt for British talent in future, his ‘auction’ could end up ‘doubling his value’ should British players become something of a premium in the near future.
Of course, this all relies on the FA making such a decision. They, though, do have a history of making terrible, game-altering choices and given what happened with Brexit, you can’t rule out anything.
