It appears that in the space of about 24 hours, the Oriol Romeu to Celta Vigo story has done a full 180.
On Monday, Mundo Deportivo were reporting the La Liga side were ‘waiting for’ the Southampton midfielder, with the deal potentially being made official this week.
Despite being a regular in the first half of the season, the Spaniard has seen his time on the pitch decline since mid November, with Ralph Hasenhüttl failing to start him once after the 2-1 loss to Everton.
That’s why talk of an exit has been somewhat rife of late, but, according to La Voz de Galicia, despite the lack of game time, Southampton aren’t keen on losing the defensive midfielder.
That means Celta Vigo will have to look elsewhere to reinforce that area of the pitch, which has become their big priority this January.
As for Southampton, perhaps they felt they wouldn’t be able to find an adequate replacement in time of a similar quality before the end of the month, meaning that if Romeu does leave, it will probably have to wait until the summer.
