Real Betis needed to boost their midfield during the winter market, having left themselves short following the summer window.
There was no panic, and the Seville club have been planning their moves ahead of the January opening. They signed Carles Alena on loan from Barcelona, and expect to complete the signing of Guido Rodriguez from Club America before the end of the week.
That doesn’t mean they’ve now forgotten about further midfield additions, and there’s a Leicester City player among the targets ahead of the summer.
Estadio Deportivo, a newspaper local to Betis, report Nampalys Mendy ‘could arrive for free’ when his Leicester contract expires at the end of the season.
That may be an option for Betis should Alena return to his parent club, Barcelona, in the summer.
Mendy’s contract situation has seen him targeted by clubs around Europe, with the planning for free transfers already starting prior to the winter market getting into swing.
With just two Premier League games so far this season, Leicester may not put up much of a fight to keep the midfielder, however, if someone offers a reasonable figure in January that could be attractive.
Betis will have to hope that doesn’t happen.
