In the list of Champions League fixtures people were desperate to watch this week, Dinamo Zagreb vs Manchester City was probably not one of them.
With City already qualified and Zagreb bottom of the group, albeit with a shot at the Europa League, it wasn’t exactly one of the glamour ties of the evening.
Yet, it seems, there was plenty of interest in the game from the Premier League, with Sporstke Novosti reporting that Liverpool and Chelsea both had scouts in attendance to watch over proceedings.
The newspaper doesn’t mention who they were there to watch, but the obvious answer is Dani Olmo, the young Spanish midfielder who has been starring for Zagreb over the past two years.
And that’s very interesting as far as Liverpool are concerned. Earlier this year we covered reports that the Reds had ‘knocked on the door’ for the 21-year-old, but his asking price ultimately ended their interest.
That appeared to be the end of it but, this latest report of them having a scout in Croatia this week would suggest otherwise.
And if they were there to watch him, they’ll have been impressed by what they saw as Olmo was arguably the home side’s best player and opened the scoring with a superb volley in the first ten minutes to boot.
Whether that alone is enough to tempt Liverpool into a bid is anyone’s guess, but there’s no denying he’d be a good fit at Anfield.
This current side has lacked a creator in midfielder since Philippe Coutinho’s departure, and while it has not held them back, a player like Olmo would be a welcome addition for Jürgen Klopp.
