This season isn’t going too well for the Pozzo family.
At the end of the last campaign, Watford finished 11th in the Premier League and Udinese were 12th in Serie A.
Now the Hornets find themselves bottom, and losing touch with safety, whereas the Italian club are in 16th position.
Having already dispensed with Javi Gracia and then Quique Sánchez Flores, Watford are without a manager. There will be those who suggest sticking with Gracia for a little longer may not have been the worst idea, but that hasn’t been the Pozzo way and fans of the Premier League side have generally bought into it.
In March 2019, Udinese appointed Igor Tudor as manager, and dismissed him on November 1st. Luca Gotti, who had been working as assistant coach, was given the caretaker role.
Gotti’s side beat Geona 3-1 in his first match in charge, and this was followed by a 0-0 draw with SPAL and losses to both Sampdoria and Lazio.
The Lazio match was a 3-0 defeat, and it was expected that afterwards the Pozzo family would relieve Gotti of his duties. Quoted by TMW, the caretaker sounded ready, and almost willing: “The club has all the elements to make the evaluations and decide the time at which it wants to undertake the new path.”
Gotti doesn’t want the job long term, yet, as it stands, Udinese are keeping him in it.
TMW report that rather than sacking their caretaker, the club have instead sent the squad on a training camp. From tonight they’ll be sent away on a mini preseason, with all their time spent with the club.
Then they face Napoli on Saturday, who have also been locked up in training.
Watford players may want to take notice.
