Going through many ups and downs during his time in England, Serge Gnabry decided to return to his country of birth when Werder Bremen came knocking, and a wise decision it was.

The winger has since established himself as a regular starter for Bayern Munich after moving there in 2017, slowly pushing out the veterans Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben last year with his ability to play on either wing.

Scoring 13 goals and assisting nine times in 42 games last year, the 24-year-old will be hoping to continue his form into the current campaign if possible.

The forward only ever made 18 appearances for Arsenal’s first-team during his five years there, and despite that lack of game time, he has no regrets over moving to London from Stuttgart.

He told Le Buteur: “Personally, I think my time at Arsenal was a complete success. Playing in the Premier League allowed me to grow and develop. As I’ve said, there isn’t a big difference between the two leagues, and I’m pleased of my career so far.

“At the beginning (with Arsenal), everything went well for me, I played regularly, but after that, I did so less. That being said, that experience was very enriching for me on a personal level.”

Looking back on how much the Gunners sold him for (£4.5m), plenty of questions can now be asked about that decision, but it was either that or let him sit on a bench since there appeared to be little desire to play him.

He certainly would fit their plans under Unai Emery these days.
