Having already spent a lot of money this transfer window, breaking their transfer record in the process for Sébastien Haller, West Ham could be in the market for cheaper options going forward.

That is, at least, what Corriere dello Sport are hinting at on Thursday, claiming the Hammers have ‘enquired’ (again, it seems) about Maxime Gonalons, currently at Roma.

The experienced midfielder doesn’t feature in the Serie A side’s plans going forward, which, combined with a hefty salary they’d prefer to get off their wage bill, leaves the door open for an exit.

Having paid a mere £4.5m for the Frenchman in the first place, any transfer away from Rome would be a cheap one, which could suit West Ham if they feel the need to add a more defensive player to their midfield before the end of the transfer window.

The Premier League club are described as a potential ‘track’ for Gonalons, who probably knows he might not have too many other big chances coming his way at the age of 30 after a relatively poor season in terms of game time (762 minutes in all competitions) behind him.

He definitely wouldn’t be a starter for the Hammers, but with claims of interest in Gary Medel continuing to circulate, he certainly could be an alternative to the Chilean.
