Leeds United fans might not care that much about Widzew Łódź for now, but they might have to in the near future, as talk of Andrea Radrizzani investing in the Polish club (in search of new owners) continues to grow in Poland.
Revealed by Przeglad Sportowy journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk, the Leeds United owner’s reported desire has made a few waves in the Eastern European country, and outlets are trying to find more about it.
There’s already been a bit of coverage regarding this interest, but Wyborcza went a step further, trying to find out more through Zbigniew Boniek, current head of the Polish football federation and a close colleague of Radrizzani’s.
He said: “More and more western clubs are interested in having a second satellite club where young players could be played or to exchange footballers. Of course, myself and Radrizzani know each other and actually talked.
“I will not give you any details. As I mentioned, there are several entities that are interested in having a second club, and Widzew is a tasty morsel. It has history, supporters and a lot of interest. Several clubs in Italy have such plans, because with a budget of several million euros, you can have another cool club elsewhere. It’s more profitable than having a reserve team at home.”
Boniek even suggested that if the right investor came along, he too could potentially join in on the action.
Since he’s such good friends with Radrizzani, that might be the one he’s talking about, and for Leeds United, this could be an ideal opportunity to set up a base to scout and develop youngsters from an ever growing market.
