Toni Kroos, like the majority of his teammates, hasn’t had a good season for Real Madrid.
The midfield, once a source of strength, has struggled to get to anything like the level which saw them win the Champions League three times in a row.
Zinedine Zidane returned as the potential saviour, and the Frenchman has struggled to have any real impact, with there being a negative cloud hanging over the club
Therefore big spending is predicted this summer, and Paul Pogba is one of the players linked most. The Manchester United midfielder has hinted he’d quite like a move to Real Madrid, and Zidane has returned the compliment.
Any midfield additions will provide extra competition for Toni Kroos. There had been suggestions the German could be the subject of transfer talks himself, but that should all now die away given a renewal, until 2023, was announced on Monday.
During the press conference which has marked the contract extension, Kroos was asked about Pogba potentially arriving from Manchester United.
He’s not too concerned about the challenge it could provide for him, Marca quote him as saying: “We can speak of many names, I also like this player, but for me it does not change what I have done in recent years here, to fight for my position.”
