When the Portuguese press says that Rui Patrício was nice to insist Sporting would get something from his transfer to Wolverhampton, that’s because he was really nice.
The goalkeeper left the Lisbon side in a moment of absolute chaos at the end of the last season, at a time when his relationship with former club president Bruno de Carvalho was going from bad to worse.
Patrício rescinded his contract with Sporting days after fans attacked players and staff at the Alcochete training centre. This event is now being investigated so authorities can know who pushed the so called fans.
Bruno de Carvalho is one of those being investigated, and today, newspaper Correio da Manhã brings some messages sent by him that show how things at Sporting were ugly at the time.
The messages were sent by Carvalho to André Geraldes, his right hand man at the time. This was after Sporting’s defeat to Marítimo in the last fixture of the Portuguese league, when they missed the chance to go to the Champions League.
Rui Patrício made an uncharacteristic mistake and conceded a goal in extra time.
“F*** off all. This Rui is the king! Go f*** yourselves,” said Bruno, very sarcastically.
The former president also made sure there would be no celebration in case the team won the cup the following weekend.
“On the cup, I will not go and there will not be any celebration of Sporting. It was canceled, cars, party at the Lisbon City Hall. Anything.”
“Shove the cup up your a***.”
Sporting players were verbally abused at the airport that day, and then things got worse at the Alcochete training centre that week, with stars injured after being beaten.
Still, the Lions played and lost the Cup final on the. Rui Patrício left the pitch crying, and soon left for Wolverhampton.
So that’s why they thinks he’s being especially nice for still caring about Sporting.
