Former Leeds United forward Marcus Antonsson has told the Swedish media he relished the chance to join Malmo in the summer despite the competition for places at the club.

Speaking to Hallandsposten, Antonsson was asked about his time at Leeds United and his decision to leave the Championship side this summer: “The injury was unfortunate, because in England if someone gets hurt, they buy a new player instead. And that’s a tough climate. One day you play with big stars, the next one you’re with the U23 team after a coach change.

“But I have never backed away from competition. I did not do that at HBK, Kalmar, Leeds and Blackburn either. On the contrary, it triggers me to be even better.”

After a promising start to his Elland Road career, Antonsson’s displays tailed off as the season went on, not helped by injury, and his chances of games were restricted by the scoring exploits of Chris Wood.

Subsequently he was loaned to Blackburn Rovers last season and despite returning to Leeds United in the summer it was always seemed he was surplus to requirements with the Championship club.

Under Uwe Rosler the player has found his scoring touch as he looks to kickstart his career.
