Leeds United star Pontus Jansson has told the Swedish press that his teammate Victor Lindelof was in tears after being ruled out of Monday’s game against South Korea.
The Manchester United defender missed Sweden’s 1-0 victory due to illness.
Speaking to Sportbladet, the Leeds United player was asked when he found out he’d be starting the game: “When I woke up, I was told Vigge would play, but I got a text before we went to the stadium: ‘Get ready. Feeling bad again.’
“Then I became very happy and a little nervous at first. But also very sad. Then I went to him in his room. Vigge was very sad. He cried. I got a tear in my eye.”
The Leeds player was asked if he was afraid, by visiting Lindelof, of becoming infected himself: “No, I wasn’t.”
Due to the Manchester United star pulling out Jansson got a rare start for Sweden, which was his debut at the World Cup.
This is in contrast to two years ago when he didn’t get any minutes during the Euro 2016, but since Janne Andersson was installed as the Sweden’s coach the Leeds United star has been a regular in the manager’s national squads.
Jansson played his part in his country reaching the World Cup finals and was a reliable back up to Lindelof and Andreas Granqvist.
There is no indication from the Sweden camp whether Jannson will retain his place ahead the Manchester United player for the next game.
