VfL Wolfsburg’s 4-1 aggregate victory against Holstein Kiel over two legs of the play-offs meant they will continue in the Bundesliga next season. Despite their struggles, goalkeeper Koen Casteels has enjoyed a good season with the German outfit, keeping eight clean sheets for a side that finished 16th in the table.
Casteels’ form has seen him make it to Roberto Martinez’s provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup. The 25 year old’s displays for Wolfsburg have also reportedly seen him attract interest from Arsenal.
When these reports started to surface, the Gunners were linked to Mikel Arteta to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates. However, Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City wasn’t given the job at the north London club.
Belgian outlet Het Belang van Limburg asked about the rumoured interest to Casteels, with Arsenal the only club referenced. He said, “Officially, there is no interest. It is still early. Only in a few weeks time, it will become clear if there are any offers for me.”
“I do not have to leave here, because I feel good at Wolfsburg. But something has to change sporting wise. I do not want to fight again to avoid relegation for the third season in a row. Instead, I would rather fight to be playing European football.”
