Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League were crushed following their 4-1 defeat at the hands of London rivals Chelsea in the Europa League final.
Unai Emery fielded Mesut Ozil in his preferred role behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, but the former Real Madrid star failed to have any impact on the game in Baku.
After the Blues netted their fourth goal in the 72nd minute, the Spanish coach, who won three Europa League trophies with Sevilla, took Ozil off and replaced him with 19-year-old Joe Willock. The teenager made his first appearance of the competition in this calendar year.
As usual, whenever there is a big game, French newspaper L’Equipe come out with player ratings and they have slammed Ozil for his performance against Chelsea.
The French newspaper states Ozil’s performance in the final once again confirms his ‘reputation of intermittent spectacle’ and despite being fielded in his preferred position, he ‘took no risk’ in the final.
L’Equipe rated Ozil 2/10 and named him as one of the ‘flops’ of the final. They further stated: ‘His most memorable act in this final is finally being replaced by the young Englishman Joseph Willock’.
Laurent Koscielny was another ‘flop’ of the final, according to L’Equipe and they rated him 3/10.
This is what they felt about the Frenchman’s performance: ‘His marking has often seemed a little loose, especially for Giroud’s goal… He also sometimes ran out of speed during Chelsea’s counterattacks in the first half.’
‘In the end, the Frenchman was very disappointing in what could be his last appearance for the Gunners.’
