Willy Kambwala joined Manchester United’s youth system in 2020, moving from Sochaux in France.
As the defender worked to try and secure a breakthrough with the Premier League club, and find a route to the Red Devils first team, he was hit by repeated injury issues. That included a knee injury which saw him spend an extended time out.
Last season an injury crisis for Erik ten Hag saw the 20-year-old get multiple opportunities, in the end playing over 300 minutes across eight Premier League appearances and picking up more in the FA Cup.
It looked like Kambwala could possibly go on to become a squad player for Manchester United, working towards more in the future.
However, that wasn’t to be and in mid July he moved to Spain to join Villarreal. He played all 90 minutes against Sevilla on August 23rd, but hasn’t been seen since.
El Periódico Mediterráneo report that after the Sevilla match, Kambwala’s ‘knee problems relapsed’ and the club have been careful with his recovery.
Defence has been a problem area, so there’s now ‘relief’ that the youngster is back in training. He won’t be rushed, but hopefully he can put those knee issues behind him and return to action soon.
