Ajax youngster Kjell Scherpen made an ‘indelible impression’ on Chelsea chief Petr Cech when the former Blues keeper saw him in 2019.

That’s according to De Telegraaf, who detail Cech’s impression of the goalkeeper when he saw him ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Ajax in November 2019.

The newspaper explains that, ahead of the Champions League meeting between the two sides, Chelsea technical advisor Cech was stood holding a conversation with Ajax’s Edwin van der Saar when Scherpen happened to walk past.

The Chelsea man asked his counterpart who the youngster was, with Van der Saar replying ‘a talent’ and little else.

Impressed by his brief glimpse, it’s claimed Cech backed the young goalkeeper to be a ‘top keeper’ because of his ‘build and imposing body’, with the 21-year-old standing at six foot six.

Nothing else was seemingly said, but the Ajax talent is said to have left an ‘indelible impression’ on Cech, who thought he would be a ‘good fit’ for Chelsea because of his ‘build’.

Now, there is no mention of Chelsea actually making a move or anything of that nature, but it certainly could be one to keep an eye on.

The Blues don’t need a number one after signing Edouard Mendy, but they will need a back up if they manage to move Kepa Arrizabalaga on in the future, and the young goalkeeper from Ajax could be an ideal fit.

That is purely speculation on our part, of course, but it would make a lot of sense, particularly if he made such a big impression on Cech in the past.
