Brighton & Hove Albion’s Steven Alzate will have to return to The Amex after finishing his loan spell at Standard Liège this season.

Earlier this month, the Jupiler Pro League side’s CEO, Pierre Locht, told Het Laatste Nieuws that his club still maintain hope of retaining the 24-year-old next season.

Locht would be delighted to know the Brighton owned midfielder has now opened the door to stay at Standard Liège if certain conditions are met. He admitted this after the club’s latest defeat to OH Leuven and his comments are relayed by Walfoot.

Standard Liège have made it to this season’s Play-Off II and the Colombia international wants to top the group to seal a berth in the European competition.

“That’s the goal and if we achieve that, then the season will be successful. Will playing on the European stage influence my decision to stay at Standard? All the players want to play in the European competition so yes, it will be an option,” he said.

It isn’t the first time the Brighton man has talked about the possibility of extending his stay in Belgium. The South American opened the door for the transfer to Standard Liège last month.

Alzate’s deal at Brighton expires in 2024. If he’s not included in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans next season, the Seagulls could sell him in the summer to avoid losing him for free next year.
