West Ham United’s Tomáš Souček captained Czech Republic in their 2-0 defeat to the Faroe Islands in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

The match took place in the Faroe Islands’ capital, and the visitors dominated possession. However, Czech Republic had only one shot on target while their opponents had three.

After the match, the West Ham star tried to put a brave face during a chat with iDNES.cz.

As per FIFA rankings, yesterday’s hosts are rated 136th and Czech Republic 39th. The newspaper pointed out the difference in ranking between the two countries and that Faroe Islands have some semi-professional players in their squad.

The 30-year-old midfielder didn’t hold back when expressing his unhappiness after the latest defeat.

“Yes, it’s bad, we should have beaten them, but we know that they beat Montenegro 4-0 here three days ago. They showed quality. Anyone can beat anyone now. I’m sorry, but we also have to see their strength,” he said.

The West Ham player is even more disappointed with the defeat after a goalless draw against Croatia last week.

When asked to sum up his feelings in one word, Souček explained: “Disappointment. After the first match with Croatia, the whole Czech Republic was excited, now this has happened. But we know that the World Cup is not about this match, but rather about the play-off in March. That will be key.”

Souček insisted the latest performance wasn’t the worst defeat of his career.

“Definitely not. I’ve experienced a lot in my entire career and this, of course, makes me very sad,” he added.

“Especially after what we showed three days ago against one of the best teams [Croatia] in the world, we should be able to handle such matches. I take it as a disappointment.”

Czech Republic are currently second in their qualifying table, a point ahead of third placed Faroe Islands and three points behind leaders Croatia. Souček believes his national team have already shown enough to qualify for the World Cup.
