Last summer the Spanish media were convinced Liverpool were trying to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

The young Spaniard had enjoyed a good season and there was great hope for what was to come ahead, so the Reds didn’t really have much chance.

The claims tended to be packaged in with those saying Madrid were keen on Mohamed Salah, and then they took on a life of their own.

Nevertheless, El Confidencial claim Liverpool ‘were considering paying more than €100m’ for Asensio last summer, yet it’s now thought his value has depreciated.

A relatively poor season saw lots of criticism go the player’s way, and then the 23 year old pulled out of Spain’s U21 squad to focus on resting. That saw more criticism, and Asensio’s social media posts were torn apart for little reason.

Even a picture of him sitting at the side of a swimming pool managed to annoy some people.

Despite all of that, Real Madrid don’t want to sell this summer, believing their player will come good again and that he’s just had a poor season.

If Liverpool interest is as genuine as had been presented, then it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on the situation.
