Liverpool have ‘already made contact’ with Xabi Alonso about the possibility of replacing Jurgen Klopp this summer.
That’s according to Fussball Transfers, who say the Spanish coach is ‘considered the top favourite’ at Anfield to be their next manager.
They explain that with Carlo Ancelotti having signed a contract extension at Real Madrid, the chances of Alonso going there this summer are pretty much zero.
Thus, it is now a battle between Liverpool and Bayern Munich for his signature, with both potentially on the hunt for a new manager in the summer.
Liverpool will be looking for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement after he announced his intention to step down, but Bayern are yet to make a decision on Thomas Tuchel, who has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks and appears to be on the brink.
That means Liverpool are one step ahead of the German giants at this moment in time and Alonso is ‘considered the top favourite’ on their list of potential Klopp replacements.
Indeed, according to FT’s information, they have ‘already made contact’ with the Spanish coach regarding a potential return to Anfield. The extent of that contact is not made clear, nor how Alonso responded to it, just that talks have been held in some capacity.
Bayern, though, don’t want to sit idly by and watch him move to Merseyside and so have now begun to explore options to replace Tuchel. They ‘want to overtake’ Liverpool in the race for Alonso and are making moves to do so.
The problem, according to FT, is that Alonso is currently ‘leaning towards Liverpool’ and the German giants need to convince him to sway back towards them. Whether they can do so remains to be seen.
