Tottenham Hotspur made an attempt to sign RB Leipzig goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi in the winter market.

That’s according to Bild, who cover why Tottenham failed to snatch the 35-year-old away from Leipzig.

The Premier League interest in the stopper isn’t new. Back in 2024, Gulácsi had revealed Nottingham Forest wanted to sign him. However, he had snubbed the Reds to continue with the Bundesliga side.

Gulácsi has now repeated it, this time by rejecting Tottenham’s firm efforts, to extend his stay at Leipzig.

His initial deal was due to run down at the end of this season. Two days ago, the German club confirmed they’ve extended his contract until 2027. This was about to be breakdown at the last minute because of Thomas Frank’s side.

Bild report Spurs made a ‘very strong effort’ to secure the Hungarian’s services in the last window.

It’s claimed Gulácsi’s agent Hasan Çetinkaya received a concrete offer from the north London club. This included a ‘substantial salary’ for a two-year contract with an option for another year. Bild make no mention of figures, but say ‘Wow, what a deal’.

Family preferred stay over Tottenham move

He would have been considered a homegrown player had Tottenham managed to secure his services. Gulácsi moved to England when Liverpool signed him for their academy in 2007. He spent six years with the Merseyside club and left them for Red Bull Salzburg in 2013.

Leipzig were aware of Tottenham’s ‘super offer’ for the stopper. Therefore, the report states the Bundesliga side stepped up their efforts to renew his contract and were successful in the end.

The Hungarian has been at Leipzig since 2015. His desire to continue with them, and his family being settled, convinced him to sign an extension.

Bild state: ‘Ultimately, Gulacsi’s heart and his family’s veto tipped the scales in favour of extending his contract in Leipzig’.
