Sunderland have previously tried to sign Napoli’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and have been given encouragement for another move.
Last summer, there were doubts about the Cameroon international’s future in Naples. This came just after Napoli had won their second Serie A title in three years, with the midfielder having been a key contributor once again.
That is when Sunderland attempted to sign the ex-Fulham player on their return to the top-flight. Sport Witness covered their approach, as Zambo Anguissa ended up preferring competing for silverware for Napoli instead of heading to the Stadium of Light.
There were indications that his family was keen on a move back to England, but that didn’t change the 30-year-old’s mind.
Now, things are changing and Regis Le Bris’ side have been handed an opportunity.
Napoli now open to sale
Il Mattino – relayed by CalcioNapoli1926, report that several Napoli players can end up in England in the summer.
There is a chance Zambo Anguissa goes down that route. The newspaper make it clear that if the Black Cats come forward for the Cameroonian, they ‘wouldn’t find the door closed’ this time around.
The Italian giants are aware that they could be forced into selling some key players this summer. Zambo Anguissa is now seen as a senior member of the squad but he can depart, with his current deal running out in 2027.
That makes 2026 the last opportunity for Napoli to earn something significant from the player’s sale.
It is believed Zambo Anguissa’s family remains keen on a return to England too. This can swing things in Sunderland’s favour, with Napoli currently preferring sales to clubs in the Premier League.
Our take: Black Cats should be alive to opportunity
A move for the former Fulham man is unlikely to cost much in the summer because of his contract situation.
Last summer, Sunderland signed a Premier League-proven midfielder in Granit Xhaka. Zambo Anguissa, like the Swiss star, has also won league titles during his time away from the English top-flight. He is also younger than Xhaka was when he moved to the Stadium of Light.
The only drawback of a move would be Zambo Anguissa’s recent fitness record. He’s struggled physically this season and this has held him back across the campaign.
But for a low fee, he could be a gamble worth taking for Sunderland.
