Benfica will need to seriously consider their move for Manchester United’s Tyrell Malacia, as he could end up spending more time out injured than in the team.
That’s according to journalist Oscar Botelho, who is not impressed by the idea of the Manchester United man joining the Portuguese side.
A report today stated that Benfica and Manchester United are in talks about the Dutch defender, who does not appear to be in Ruben Amorim’s plans moving forwards.
The report made it clear that Benfica were eyeing up the defender as an alternative to Alvaro Carreras, who will be the only option on the left-hand side if Niklas Beste moves to Freiburg as expected.
The move could be ideal for Malacia, who is still trying to get back to full fitness after his long injury lay-off. He needs regular playing time, which does not appear to be on offer at Manchester United.
Botelho, though, isn’t convinced he would be available enough to get that playing time and clearly thinks Benfica need to avoid the transfer rather than push for it.
“It is also important to say, and perhaps one of the most relevant data of this negotiation, he had 17 months off due to injury,” he said.
“The issue of Malacia is exactly that issue of injuries and mainly to be a substitute for Carreras. And therefore, I would say that it would not make much sense, if this loan is confirmed, given what has been a recent past of Benfica in this same type of acquisition.
“I would say that here Benfica gets very used to the player spending more time as a substitute or injured, than being a shadow of Carreras.”
