In need of regular playing time this season, Jan Bednarek moved to Aston Villa on a loan deal from Southampton towards the end of the last transfer window.
The Poland international’s decision to join the Villans hasn’t paid off completely since his game time has been restricted this season. The defender had hoped for more minutes in order to help him prepare well for the 2022 World Cup.
Instead, the centre-back has managed 90 minutes of action with Aston Villa, which came from two matches. This is unlikely to have an impact on his chances of representing his country in Qatar later this month.
Poland manager Czesław Michniewicz will announce the final squad today. The 26-year-old is expected to be included in the list. That’s according to TVP Sport, who explained that Bednarek is among the ‘core’ players of the national team.
Meanwhile, WP SportoweFakty have also backed the player to make it to the Poland squad for the World Cup.
Bednarek’s brother, Filip, who plays as a goalkeeper for Lech Poznań, shared his thoughts on the possibility of the Aston Villa man representing his country in the FIFA tournament.
“It was the first time in Russia, so it’s like a huge pride and a lot of nerves that accompanied it, because sometimes, when you play on the pitch yourself, you are less nervous than you feel responsible for your little brother,” Filip said, as quoted by Radio Eska.
“I, as an older brother, always somewhere I experience and worry about him, not because he can’t handle it, but more simply, as a brotherly concern. I really care that he looks good, that he is healthy first of all and that nothing bad happens because I know what football is like and I know what comes with it.”
