Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer is today highlighted in a very nice piece from ESPN Brasil.
Ahead of the Blades’ match against Chelsea at the weekend, the outlet tells the story of the 26-year-old defender, who was born in South America and went to Europe very young.
Hamer is Brazilian, but doesn’t speak Portuguese as he was adopted by a Dutch family early on. He was just to years old when he left the country, but still, he makes it clear he has big feelings for the place, and says he wants his son to understand more about his history.
“I still feel Brazilian today. When I see other Brazilian players, I see a connection in their technique, I’m calm on the ball, I like to play with the ball at my feet. One of my strengths is also my intensity. I never give up, I think that comes from Brazil too. I’ll always be Brazilian,” Gustavo Hamer told ESPN Brasil.
“I want to take my son to Brazil, take him to Itajaí to show him how things are, how the world is. I make a good living from football and I don’t want him to be spoilt. My biological father was a fisherman, he didn’t have any money. I want him to understand that, how life can be, I want him to be humble and a good person.”
Hamer, who started his career in Dutch football, arrived in England in 2020, when Coventry City signed him. Last summer, Sheffield United made a big investment to get him signed and paid €17.3m to land on a four-year contract.
The midfielder became an important player for the Blades, and already has two goals and two assists in 17 appearances. He claims he’s still amazed by the chance of playing in the Premier League.
“In a word: it’s unbelievable. You dream about it, you work hard, you need a bit of luck along the way, at grassroots you have to be seen, you have to work every day, give everything, make sacrifices, not give up to become a professional. The Premier League is another level, it’s very difficult, a challenge, you see it on TV and you think it’s fast, but it’s even faster, it’s another game entirely.”
