On Wednesday, we covered claims from Brazil which stated Chelsea had made an offer consisting of €8m plus €4.5m as potential bonuses for Corinthians youngster Denner. It was also stated the Blues were set to have a meeting yesterday, during which they could ‘seal the deal’.

Corinthians president Augusto Melo has talked about the offer received for the 16-year-old and why sanctioning his sale is good for the club.

Melo has been speaking to Meu Timão about the Chelsea target and Globo Esporte have relayed his comments. Their title says the president ‘explains the agreement with Chelsea’ for the left-back’s sale.

Last summer, Denner was promoted to Corinthians U20s and is yet to represent their first team. He can only move to Europe once he turns 18-years-of-age in February 2026.

Taking these factors into account, Melo insists the operation with Chelsea for the teenager is good for the club.

“For a 16-year-old boy who hasn’t yet stepped into the professional ranks, who is a promise, who still has two years to stay at Corinthians because he can only leave after he turns 18, it is a wonderful sale, in a way,” he said.

The South American club’s desire was to extend the Brazilian’s contract by improving his salary and upping his termination clause. However, his representatives weren’t in favour of this and therefore Corinthians have decided to sell the defender.

“He has a clause, the agents didn’t agree to increase the clause because there was already an enquiry to sell. There’s nothing we can do about it, either you accept, or they pay the ridiculous clause,” Melo explained.

“I want to make one thing very clear: it’s not what I wanted, it’s not what I want. I would never sell Denner now. As much as I need money, I kept the players in the squad and renew their contracts.

“We don’t have money to hire, we are making sacrifices. It’s not a great sale for Corinthians, but it’s a necessity. In context, it’s an excellent sale. After all, he would either leave for R$10m [€1.63m for Brazilian clubs] or leave abroad.”

The president claims the overall fee from Denner’s sale to Chelsea could rise to €15m.

“There is a proposal, it is €8m, and then there is a value of €500,000 for a specific number of games. With the bonus, the contract could reach €15m,” he added.
