Wolves midfielder Fer Lopez’s potential return to Celta Vigo this month appears to be wobbling.
That’s at least according to Atlantico and La Voz de Galicia, who both cover the situation today. It seems the certain transfer may now be heading towards trouble.
Lopez has been lined with a return to his former club for months. He joined Wolves from Celta in the summer but has barely featured at Molineux since. The situation has not improved under Rob Edwards.
Celta are happy to bring him back and have even made space in their squad to make it happen. Everyone except Wolves agreed to the idea, but sources stated that Wolves could change their position once they complete their busy fixture list this week
Atlantico now report that there’s the significant hurdle of a financial agreement with Wolves. The midfielder’s salary is ‘substantial’ and it’s almost impossible for the Spanish side to cover that in full. The bonus for Celta, though, is that Lopez wants to return to his former club above all else.
That means he’ll ignore more financially advantageous offers for Wolves if it comes to it. Celta can use that to their advantage. But there are limits to what Celta can do and that will provide hurdles.
Wolves exit far from fully agreed
La Voz de Galicia say similar. They report that while all signs point to Lopez returning from Wolves, Celta are not yet fully committed to it.
Lopez wants to return and manager Claudio Giráldez is in agreement. Celta’s board are happy to do a deal, and Wolves have admitted the need to secure a loan and bring money back to recoup the €23m investment from the summer.
One roadblock could be Jorge Mendes. He has considerable influence at Wolves, and his decision could be key to the deal being finalised. Like the previous report, they present the Portuguese agent as a problem which could stop the deal from happening.
There’s plenty of time for the deal to be worked out, of course. But right now, it appears the deal is not as easy as was first presented.
