Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Gonçalo Guedes received some bad news on Wednesday.

Portuguese club Benfica announced on their official website that the player will undergo surgery in the coming days.

Guedes has cartilage damage in his left knee, and that’s the reason he hasn’t been able to start in any of the Eagles’ recent games.

This is the second time the Wolves loanee has needed a knee operation in the past few months. Back in March, Benfica had also announced a meniscus surgery in the same knee, with him being sidelined for a month because of that.

The forward never started a game for the Eagles since then. He was supposed to be an important player for the club in this final stretch of season, but even when brought on late in games, was showing this physical discomfort.

With Guedes no longer playing for Benfica this season, it stays unclear whether the club will move to buy him from Wolves, or at least try a new loan. This week, we’ve seen the Eagles’ vice-president hinting that their intention would be to keep him.
