Raúl Jiménez has detailed how Wolverhampton Wanderers refused to let him have surgery this season to help with his injury issues.
The striker has been speaking to TUDN in his homeland, relayed by Fox Sports, about his injury issues this season and an apparent disagreement with Wolves over his recovery.
The Mexican recently underwent surgery to correct a groin pain that has troubled him all season, with the forward spending much of the campaign on the treatment and managing just 20 appearances and 1170 minutes of action in all competitions.
His injury problems have been a regular source of frustration for Wolves and Mexico this season, particularly with Julen Lopetegui’s side struggling in that department.
He returned at the end of the season but has now undergone treatment to correct the problem, something he says Wolves stopped him from doing earlier in the campaign despite the fact he wasn’t playing for them regularly.
“When I started not playing there in the team I said: ‘Well, I can take advantage of this season that the coach is not using me’,” he said.
“I told them, I said: ‘hey, I’m not playing, but to be at 100 per cent’. In the end they told me no, ‘wait, we want you to play’.
“Then I had an injection to help with the pain and that’s why I finished the last few games playing and it was something that helped me.
“The pain came back a little bit later, during a week that I had on holiday between the tournament and the friendly matches (with the Mexican national team). I knew I wasn’t going to the Gold Cup and, well, that’s when I decided to have the operation.”
